Porting is the process of taking software from one environment and making it work in another one. Porting can be a very attractive option compared with re-writing from scratch when creating a new version of an existing application or server as the effort involved can be significantly reduced.

There are a number of programming environments on the Symbian Foundation platform that are possible targets for porting.

The Migrating to the Symbian Foundation Platform article is an introductory guide to porting to Symbian's native code execution environment (C/C++) - a more comprehensive guide to this subject is the book Porting to the Symbian Platform. Qt and Open C and Open C++ subcategories provide additional information for users wanting to port using these programming environments.
